ABLE would provide help to parents of special needs children

Caring for a child with a serious disability has its rewards, and of course, its emotional and financial challenges. A bill introduced in Congress last year aims to help ease the financial  concerns. The Achieving a Better Life Experience Act, or ABLE for short, would allow families to establish tax-exempt accounts for the benefit of their youngsters, similar to the 529 accounts parents establish to save for a child's college education. The accounts would cover disability-related expenses such as transportation, housing, education, therapies and assistive technologies that help a special needs individual to live independently.  The accounts would not supplant government assistance such as Medicaid and SSI but simply supplement it.
