Avoid scams when giving to Japan

My readers are a charitable bunch of folks, so I suspect many of you are considering contributing something to the Japanese cleanup effort. The destruction is on a massive scale, and incidentally, a disproportionate number of those affected are seniors.

If you are planning to contribute, please make sure that you give to a legitimate charity. As usual, there is no shortage of con artists and scammers posing as charitiable organizations who will gladly take seniors' Japan-bound dollars just to feather their own pockets. Here's a very informative blog from Consumer Reports on how to make sure who you're giving to do is legitimate. The advice is good not just for this situation, but for any charitable cause you are considering for a donation.
