We Americans have been bemoaning our own troubled economy and fraying social safety net. But compared to the residents of Haiti, we have so much. We're practically living like royalty. And royalty has an obligation to help those who have less, as much as we possibly can - they call that noblesse oblige. If you're planning on making a contribution to disaster relief in Haiti, make sure you contribute to a well-known, reputable organization. This morning's news on public radio notes that times like these bring out unscrupulous "charities" only too ready to prey on your compassion and bilk you out of funds that will never reach intended recipients. One safe bet is the American Red Cross, which already has its boots on the ground in Haiti. Click here to go to the Red Cross donation page.

The major radio talk show hosts have too suggested donating to the Red Cross to make sure the money gets to the appropriate place. This is an almost unprecedented disaster and I feel we should do all we can to help this devastated country. I agree that the Red Cross is the way to go to make sure we are helping the victims in the correct manner.
